Here's a chance for me to learn something new! I totally messed up my Hardy install, far, far beyond sticking in a few deleted apps. What would be procedure be to install fresh without removing data? What I have in mind is moving to 8.10 since a reinstall is needed anyway. BTW I do have the data backed up, but I think this would be a good thing for me to go through

Create a home partition. Look here -
Rather then making a separate /home partition, just make a data partition.
