for example, i have a dark theme in which the text is white. the url area of firefox is now white on white, and i cant see the url. how can i fix this?

Welcome to the troublesome world of dark themes. Depending on how much development went into the theme, you'll have problems with things like that. For a good dark theme that has *fewer* problems, you'll probably want Intrepid's *dark room*.
Dark themes in general have problems with application text fields, blank space, etc. though.
