Problem with the partitioner

Hi, i just managed to enter the installation of ubuntu in the low graphics mode as there was no other way to do it, and now i am watching the partitioner and i am trying to make space for ubuntu without deleting entirely my other partition of windows vista, but it doesn't seem possible. I can only install ubuntu on my whole 320GB partition, or delete the partition and make new ones. How could i shrink the partition of windows so i can install ubuntu on it? Thanks

Use the resize tool that comes with vista to resize your vista partition first, then run the installer again.

Oh. Is there any way i can do this without having the actual cd of windows?

Can you download and burn and iso of gparted?

Is it okay if i download LiveUSB instead of LiveCD, and use an external hard drive to run it?

You really should use the disk management tools of vista to shrink its partition, not gparted, which appears sometimes, not always, to corrupt the vista install. Once you have shrunk vista with its own tools, install ubuntu and when you get to the partitioning part, choose manual, and use the free space you made in vista.

Yeah but vista only allows me to use 10GB, when i have 150GB free! I mean after shrinking, the size of my HDD says it will be 10GB smaller. How do i fix that?

I defragment my HDD and now vista will only allow me to shrink 4GB >_>

after duel booting 10 pc,s I have used g-parted disk with no failures I did defrag windows at least twice and have been very happy. I just started using ubuntu on usb and gparted on usb should work fine. just have not tried it yet.

P.S of the 10 dual boots of friend and customers computers 8 came back and had remove windows. doing one right now.
