Where does the learning curve end and the failings of Ubuntu begin?
3 months of messing with a hardwired network, works one day, don't work the next.
Every trick in the book has been tried!
Every single time we get a new upgrade, even if it's not related to the network at all, the network goes down.
I thought I was doing pretty darn good getting our most stubborn machine on line and holding.
Now I primary file server is down, been down all day long and I lost a whole days work trying to get the network up and running.
Oh, it works barely if handling each and every single file manually, but not correctly.
It appears the networking problem dates back for many years and is still not fixed. smb.conf is fairly useless since Samba gets its info from /var/lib/samba a binary and not from the smb.conf file.
Networking works just fine in Red Hat and CentOS and most other Distro's except Debian based distro's.
I've converted my entire office, sans two machines to Ubuntu, everything is great except for the stinkin' lousy networking problems that have plagued us from day one.
I'll be up all night after spending the entire day already AGAIN, and if the network is not up and running flawlessly by Monday morning, Ubuntu will be deleted from every machine I own.
This problem has ceased to be just an inconvenience, or small bugs in Ubuntu, it's now a major failure of Ubuntu and not a bit funny any more.
I'm running Hardy 8.04 LTS that is supposed to be a STABLE release. Problem is file sharing LAN NOT Internet which works through the LAN also. Hardwired LAN and the problem is NOT the Ethernet nor the Computers, the same problems have existed on 8 different computers that work perfectly fine with Windows all flavors and CentOS (RedHat), but are riddled with networking problems in Ubuntu.
2 years of working on the problem and no progress of any kind has been made by the Ubuntu teams, based on all the archives I've read here and elsewhere!
There is either a cure for these problems available RIGHT NOW or their will never be! Were down to the straw that broke the camels back.
I think 3 months has been plenty of time to get issues resolved and most of the major issues I've had are still open with no suggestions on what to do about them. And when our most stable and best machine goes down and can't be brought back on line again, there is something drastically wrong with Ubuntu! And it don't appear anything is being done about it.
So, what do you say guru's? Do we get this network stable or do I move on to greener pastures?????
