I have two different purchased ubuntu 8.04 disks from Official Ubuntu Book and linuxidentity. I have a self burn too. If they run they fail during "load installer components from CD". I can get to the 'ash' shell from there but then i'm not sure where to start breaking(editing) things. I can load knoppix and rescuecd. from there can i tell them what to load from the ubuntu cd?

Hard drive boots xp sometimes ....I am trying to make windows go away! U know put in install cd, zap hard drive to linux and be on my way to gone. rescued cd says hd is good and has stuff on it; fat32,ext2 and more. I originally was going to have both OS's but not anymore. I got my important stuff off to external drive and BEGAN TO THRASH. I have grub on a hard drive I could swap to but in only offers memtest and I dont know where/what to edit to have it look elsewhere or offer to do something else.

almost forgot: older pc VIA C3 1.1ghz ECS P6VEM3 mtbd nov/2002 sis630 chipset and video, sound and lan.

From the install menu I can check the cd integrity but i dont see any good or bad message it just goes back to the menu. with knoppix live and rescue cd "we" should be able to make this pc behave right? but I am not sure what to do. Do I have to use gparted first and start that way? But after that i would still have the ubuntu install brokeness. I have dsl internet so could go the net install route but I'm learning plenty of linux locally and having fun poking this thing with my own hands. I can edit a file. I Read a lot of posts, checked some hardware lists, didnt sort an answer out of it thanks, Wayne new at linux, used some unix 25 years ago.

Let's start slowly. Did you try the alternate installer? It is a text-based installation, which can rule out many glitches especially on older machines.
