I installed inside of windows ubuntu, I had vista, and do a lot of computer work for my job, I had it dual boot, instill after a few days i got the grub error 15, i ran into before messing with linux dirto's i fixed them before with the super grub disc, anyways I used the disc to try to fix this error, this never fixed it and messed up my booting for windows, the "bootmrg missing" error, I ended up trying the vista recovery disc, this didnt work and once i opened my harddrive in a partitioning disk that the partition windows was on with all my files was "unknown file type" ect.. but could tell my other partition's formats.

now i reinstalled unbuntu on a partition, and i love it i always been wanting to get away from windows and havent had a down fall yet, but a few bugs like,

i couldnt boot for awhile because gnome said "cant lock /home/me/.ICEauthority"

i ended up fixing this by going into the live cd and changin permissions on the ICEauthority

ended up working and i even have all my drivers (wifi, video card, ect..) working.

now I think this can be a good thing having linux now, but does anyone have ideas how to recover my files on the unknown partition that was once my windows install?

i have most of my files backed up and put into my new os, but I will lose some important work.

other than this, im loving ubuntu

I got the same error actually, and the exact same thing happened to me. I decided to just install ubuntu over everything and installed vista on a partition. I wonder what causes that error o.O?

yeah, the grub error is odd, the super grub disc usually does good on fixing this but i guess not if your dual booting which probably messed up my bootmgr giving me "bootmgr missing"

now after I had everything running on ubuntu with all my drivers and most of my backed up files on it, thats when i got a "cant lock ICEauthority"

which accured after i tryed to hibernate my laptop, it kept giving errors in the dos like prompt.

So I had no choice but hit control+alt+delete to restart my machine.

then it wouldnt login to gnome, where all my drivers and personal settings were.

so the live cd helped alot, lol and I learned from all of this, BACKUP REGULARLY

does anyone know a backup program for ubuntu that will backup my files AND drivers ect..???
