A new convert

Well, I think Ubuntu has won another full time user. That user, of course, being me.

This is not my first attempt at converting to the Linux lifestyle, however. I tried years ago to "go Linux" on a Compaq Presario Laptop. After going through a few distros, and learning a little bit about Linux, laptops, and Winmodems, I decided that I wasn't ready to embrace Linux just yet.

Fast forward to present day, I recently bought a new computer, and I decided to give Linux a whirl again. I decided to give Ubuntu a try. A couple of weeks ago, I downloaded and burned the amd64 version of 8.10.

Not wanting to wipe Windows from my system just yet, I decided to set it up as a dual boot.

My first day using Ubuntu was a good one. I had a few questions, which I was able to find the answers for on various websites (including Ubuntu's own help section).

This is the computing experience I want. It does just what I want it to do. The system is stable and fast. It's as easy or hard as I want it to be. If I want to only play it safe and just use the Gnome to do everything, I can. If I want to get my hands dirty, I can do that too!

I really am in control. I look forward to learning more about the heart of the system. I want to see what this baby can do. I can't foresee me booting into Windows anytime soon. As a matter of fact, I was considering reinstalling Ubuntu, this time using the entire hard drive and saying goodbye to Windows for good.

I am finally ready for Linux!

Haha, I actually have ubuntu on a compaq presario laptop. Glad to see you like it, I agree about being in control, windows doesnt let the user do what they want.

Actually, I still have my old laptop which I was referring to in my original post. Right now it just collects dust in a closet in my apartment.

Maybe I should dust it off and see how it fares with Ubuntu. At least then I'll get to see first hand if Linux really does breathe new life into old machines....

Well.. Dont know that Id call this machine old... But ubuntu simply could not run faster! It about doubles the speed I had with vista.

If you are going to install on an older machine I would recommend you trying hardy (8.04) instead on intrepid.mostly due to the legacy display drivers support (or just use the live cd to check if runs well in intrepid).

eitherway depending on the amount of ram you have , you might prefer to try xubuntu instead of ubuntu, MY rule of the thumb is try ubuntu if it is over 512 and xubuntu if it is 512 or below.
