I doubt I was running as root as all I do is log in. I don't understand how one runs as root. All I did before problem started was copy a picture.
You can see the network connections with "netstat -anp" Maybe you will find something suspicious like a process port scanning. You could also use the *top* command to see if there is a process taking up a an unusually large amount of CPU/memory.

I don't know what the cause of your problem is, but whether it's from an attack, or some kind of misconfiguration, the result may be the same-- to reformat.
I think it was attach of some sort, for this mounring I could not connect to the web or get my mail. I rebooted with ubuntu disk and could only get the home page. Now I have rebooted with windows xp.
