3D Rage Pro

I just got another old computer and decided to install Ubuntu on it. It's running well with one exception: it doesn't seen to use hardware opengl. It's using a 3D Rage Pro card and also has some onboard card (don't know what it is, haven't checked it out).

The onboard seems to be used during bootup and if the xserver isn't running. When the xserver is up, the rage card is used.

How do I get 3D acceleration to work on the 3D Rage Pro card? I looked everywhere but couldn't figure it out. I read that it might not be supported unless I install Utah-GLX or DRI, which I couldn't figure out how to install either.

How do you know its not?

Open a program named terminal You find it in the Ubuntu menu Yust search tru it;)

I know it's not because I already checked with "glxinfo | grep direct" :) glxinfo tells me it's using mesa indirect, direct rendering: no.

Besides, I screwed it up completely after playing around with X, now even uninstalling xorg and reinstalling it doesn't help. I've got to wipe it and install Ubuntu again.

I think I have about the same VGA, ATI Rage Pro Turbo PCI. I dont remember where but I saw it being refered to 3D Rage Pro and also ATI Mach64 and it has no hardware accellaration. Can I tweek it in any way? I am running on an older iMAC (PPC) if that helps. Would really like to get some kind of 2D/3D hardware accellaration.

Not sure about that guy, but I just reinstalled Ubuntu on the PC. I decided to see what the onboard card was, and what a coincidence, I've got another PC here with the same chipset (although I never tried to get 3d accel on that one). I looked around and didn't manage to get either the 3D Rage Pro or the onboard SiS 630 to get direct rendering/3d accel.

Looks like the mach64 stuff would work: http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/ATIMach64

Follow the instructions on the Building page. Mach64 is now on the DRI trunk.

You can download 2 files from their snapshots directory, look up that savage HowTo I referred to and compile 2 kernel modules. And hopefully it will work.

When I have time i'll see how good that driver is on my 3D Rage Pro AGP 2X.

Ive been looking around on a lot of other forums and websites and it seems that there have been a lot of issues with this particular video card. Would i be right in saying that? Im only wondering because im considering purchasing one for my old rig and it would be helpful to know if it will be problematic.

Stay away from anything NOT named Radeon or Geforce.. as anything else is bound to be to old/slow or unsupported..

Why buy a 3D Rage Pro? It'd cost you about $10 to get a 64mb Geforce card.

Okay, I googled like a furious madman, redownloaded and recompiled, changed configs, but I STILL couldn't figure this out. The only thing that's left is to compile the Mesa drivers. Here's what happens when I try:

I have a Rage Pro agp 2x card too and it doesn't work too well either and reading all this confuses me quite a lot. Maybe I'm too new to linux to understand all this, but I really want to get it working properly. As I understand is that the card will never deliver anything fast (it's not an old and slow card for nothing) but at least I'd like to get rid of the extremely slow desktop graphics in gnome.

As for my current linux knowledge: I'm in the stage of starting to understand how to work with gnome and browsing through directories using the terminal goes quite well too. So if someone is willing to help me, I'd be very gratefull as it will probably also help me understand a bit more of linux. And please don't blame me for being a n00b (as in being completely new to all this), believe me, I already know.

i have one of those cards (an all in wonder pro) and a s3 pci card, wich do you think is better to give a try?

How do I get 3D acceleration to work on the 3D Rage Pro card? I looked everywhere but couldn't figure it out. I read that it might not be supported unless I install Utah-GLX or DRI, which I couldn't figure out how to install either.

In breezy, it should work out of the box if the card has enough memory.

You can reconfigure the xserver to use a lower color depth and screen resolution to get it working. On a 8MB such card, I need to set the screen to 16-bit, 800x600 for dri to work.
