NETGEAR’s Powerline HD Ethernet Adapter

I am trying to find out if these devices can be used by linux. The specification mentions only windows and mac pc's. I see from some of the posts that people are having problems with these devices.):P

I'm using similar device (Dlink) with no problem. connecting to internet and router easily. Windows to Linux sharing is a problem for me but suspect that it's not a hardware problem. In my case there's no driver to install and Linux thinks it's hooked directly to wired router.

I have ubuntu 8.10 installed and it works very well with the verizon FIOS modem they gave me when plugged in. But when I try to move it to another room and connect with the NetGear Powerline Ethernet Adapter, it doesn't seem to recognize that there's a connection. At all. My other systems don't have a problem with the powerline adapter, and even my ubuntu VirtualBox works when attached to the powerline. Is there special software to install for the Powerline Ethernet adapter?

[INDENT][/INDENT]I just bought this same product except I have a problem. Instead of connecting the main powerline to my router (which is the source of my internet access) and the secondary one to a PC (or ps3, for example), I have connected both ends to wireless routers.

[INDENT][/INDENT]I did this because I need wireless internet connectivity in my house upstairs and I don't want an ethernet cord running through my house. Thus i bought the powerline adapters along with a new router for upstairs. This setup works perfectly fine as i get full wireless internet access upstairs, except I have one annoying problem.

[INDENT][/INDENT]The ethernet cord coming from my upstairs powerline adapter goes into the WAN port of my upstairs router in order to get internet access. Because of this i can't access any of my files or use my printer downstairs which are connected to my downstairs router (via the main powerlien adapter). Is there a way I can still have internet access on my upstairs router yet also have access to my printer and files downstairs while connected to my upstairs router?

i love those things, best connection you can get without running actual cables. i been slowly replacing all the wifi with those, currently i still have half my computers still using ethernet wireless bridge's for connection. i have the netgear xe102 14mb, my dsl connections only 3.5 so it's plenty fast enough.

also don't believe that it needs to be plugged into the wall, i've got it on power stripes on the computer end and it works the same, i've even plugged it into the outlet on a light and it works.

I have been using the Netgear powerline devices for 3 months now, and only recently have had problems, always with my Ubuntu machines. The connection goes in and out constantly, and then seems to quit. I have both Karmic and Jackalope setups. Jackalope is the worst.

have you tried restarting your router?(pull the plug wait for a while & plug back in) move the cable to a different router slot? check loose plug or cables?

Much of the time for powerline devices when they say support for PCs and Macs only, they are referring to the software administration utility on the CD that ships with the units. The powerline adapters themselves will work fine with Unix. You just can't run the software for changing the network password, etc.

I saw some new adapters from Plaster Networks that have a built-in web app for administering the network - no need to load any software on your system because all you need is a standard browser (PC, Mac, or Linux). The concept is similar to the management and administration tool in most routers these days.

Yes, I've tried all of the above numerous times. Then if I plug in a windows machine, the connection restarts and will work. If I then plug an Ubuntu machine in, it will work for awhile and then the connection will go dead again. Pity, because it worked for months with an Ubuntu machine.
