My 64-bit flash rant

I'm sorry, I've read *way* to many posts about this and I just don't get it. What is so hard about installing Flash on 64-bit? Since Gusty, Ubuntu practically does it all for you.

Whenever I install a new version of Ubuntu, I simply go to Youtube, and when the popup asks to install flash, I click the next button, type in my password and I'm done! WHY IS THIS SO HARD!

Don't get me wrong, I understand it when people complain about flash crashing, etc. That happens. However, If you can't figure out how to install it, shame on you. It's as simple as it can get! I haven't used 32 bit in a while, but from what i understand, it's the same.

Adobe just released their 64bit flash version within the last few weeks, if you installed it in Gutsy before that, it was the 32bit version. Sure most people install it without trouble, but there are many many ways it can go wrong as evidenced by the hundreds (maybe thousands?) of posts on this forum alone.

If you ever installed a newer version (than available in the repositories) from Adobe in an attempt to get rid of bugs, it is easily possible to get the lib file installed in the wrong directory or get a symlink pointing to the wrong file. IME this is the main cause of trouble with installation problems.

The 64-bit Linux Flash is still alpha software, so bugs are to be expected.

I'm not talking about the new 64-bit plugin Adobe just released. I'm talking about the old 32-bit one, that has the nice little installer.

Yeah, the 64-bit plugin may be alpha, but it's still 100x more stable than the nspluginwrapper + 32-bit plugin. A lot faster as well. So I recommend it to everyone.

hmm I was thinking about giving the 64 bit a spin...and advice? as for the flash plug-in goes...I had my cat install it while I was on the phone ;)

I think I just found out why people have such a hard time. That's not how you're supposed to install it. You may want to read this.

Yes, to run the 32-bit Flash plugin under a 64-bit browser, one needs nspluginwrapper.
