Wanna be Ubuntu user getting fustrated!

I am trying to install Ubuntu 5.10 on a Mac iBook G-3 500 MHz. 384 RAM and 10 GB HD with Mac OS 10.4.

I am using the Ubuntu supplied pressed discs, www.elucis.com discs ordered on internet, and of course the 5.10 I downloaded and save to disc several times.

The iBook doesn't really recognize any of the discs (except for one elucis DVD). But no disc will start up the iBook.

I have installed Ubuntu on a PC with success. My G-4 Tower recognizes all the discs, but that is not the computer I want to install on. I am not trying for a dual boot. I want to just be able to have linux on this little laptop.

Any ideas?

Are you holding down 'c' as you start the computer?

Yes I hold down the C key even the tried apple-alt-shift-delete.

If you're using the Ubuntu PPC disk the problem has got to be with the iBook, either some strange motherboard issue or a defect in the drive. The PPC disc should boot with no problem; I had no trouble at all installing 5.10 on my own G3 500 mhz iBook. (It runs faster than OS 10 does, too.)

Yes, I'm starting to agree. It must be the iBook. Although I've repaired the system (even reinstalled it). It is time to consider hardware. I'm new to linux and this type of search for an answer, I appreciate your help.

I have the same problem, with a PowerBook G4 17", can't startup with the Live CD. I also tried starting up with the Option key pressed, but the Live CD doesn't appear. Is there a way to force it?

Have your tried apple-alt-shift-delete.

Run Apples Disk Utility. With the latest Mac OS update it can verify, but not repair your Hard Drive. In order to repair from the Hard Drive you have to boot (startup) from the install disk the go to Utilites and run Disk Utility.

If I remember correctly a disk that checks for hardware problems came with this iBook as well as another of my iMac's. I can't find my iBooks hardware disk and you have to use the disk that is specific to that model of iBook. I still suspect hardware. I'm currecntly doing another clean reinstall.

I have tried these tricks on my Ti Powerbook G4 500Mhz to no avail. I can read the CD in OSX but can not use the Live CD or the Install CD to run Ubuntu.

Finally found I have a bad optical drive. It was slowly going out.
