Connect to internet Dial Up

Hello From a newbe):P

Have just installed as the only operating system Ubuntu 8.10 on my old pentium 3 computer It installed ok What I just cannot work out is how to connect to the internet and how to get an ISP Must be dial up as only have internal modem Could somebody point me in the right direction?

Im assuming you have access to an ISP somewhere, a user name/password, a modem , guessing it should be a dialup connection, what type of modem is it?

Can you provide more details as to what you are connecting to and how

Hello My problem is that I am already using Broadband and Win XP on my current computer. What I am doing is experimenting with Ubuntu on my old machine. Its so old it does not have an Ethernet input but does have a modem. The idea was to Load ubuntu and have a play with it. It loaded with no problems. Don't know where to go from there. Don't know how to get an ISP dial up service

if you are looking for a isp service , then you need to mention where you live , so that people familiar with your place may know the local ISP dial up providers

Recommend you open up a general post or do some research about free dial up services in the UK.

ON the web there are a bunch, however, who knows whats good or bad. A lot of free dialup ISP have huge contention problems , i.e. you have to dial in a few times before you get access and the speeds are sucky (especially if you are coming down from broadband).

Once you pick a horse, try using the link above to setup the dialup component.

However, I would save yourself a lot of bother, and get yourself a cheap Ethernet nic for your machine and an Ethernet switch connect one into the other and have it connect to your brodaband modem If its a laptop of course this wont help.

Hello Actually do have an ethernet switch as have 2 computers on my network Both Desk tops theres a couple of spare outputs. What is an ethernet nic? is it just a board that you buy and fit in your PC Would love to get connected as like what I see so far on Ubuntu

Don't get me wrong - I'm on dial-up,too - but I'd agree... Unless machine is laptop, or has no expansion slots, it might be easier to find/install NIC. Older ISA cards are a giveaway item anymore (I'd send you one of mine, but postage would cost more than card is worth).
