Looking for some advice, I am a Mac user with Macbook 2.4GHz intel core 2 duo. I would like to try Ubuntu and am downloading the 64 bit version to burn my CD. Can I boot from the CD to try the system out or does it require install to HD. If HD install required i would like to create a partition to hold the new OS, what format is required. I know these questions r probably v simplistic but i am very new at this.

You can first boot from the CD and try out the OS without any risk. If you decide to install it, it will be best to create a partition and format it as Ext3 to install Ubuntu into it. The installation guide will offer you to do this.

There are a few extra hoops you need to jump through to install Ubuntu on a Mac, what with EFI as the replacement BIOS etc.
The guide is still for Hardy rather than Intrepid, but the installation instructions here ( https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook ) are still relevant.
