xscript vs GNOME session login in Ubuntu

I've tried both and they seem the same. What's the difference?

oh okay, they are the same. the log in manager is called gdm sessions lets you select what de/wm you want to use if you have others installed. gnome runs xscript to see what the default is, so it's the same thing under different names.

i could be wrong though, i haven't used gnome or gdm in a while, i don't remember the xscript ever showing up in gdm sesssion. the only thing i can think of is it's to add extra options to a session.

try running "whereis xscript" in a terminal and have a look at it.
