Is there some way to determine which of the repositories in sources.list a particular package comes from?

Yes - from the command line, "apt-cache show packagename" will show all sorts of details about the package, including the repository it's in, and in synaptic you can check out the "properties" of the package - the repository it's from is in there somewhere, I think.

You can also look in Synaptic (see screenshot) or go to http://packages.ubuntu.com and search for the package.
