Suggestions for Free Linux Video/Audio Editing Suite

Hello all,

I'm looking for a software application/suite, something along the lines of Sony Vegas, that will allow me to chop up and modify video and audio tracks. I'm fairly new to both Linux and video/audio editing, but thought I'd throw this out to see what's available.

Ability to input/output a wide range of video/audio formats. Ability to transform audio and video with various effects Free or Open Source is always better

Is there an all-in-one app currently available? -if Yes: what is/are the the 2 or three best suites in your opinion or experience for me to consider -if No : what apps or programs should I look into to best accomplish the task of creating professional looking video and audio?

What commercial video/audio would you suggest for linux/ubuntu?

recently seen the announcement of Kdenlive http://kdenlive.org/ the features seems pretty good.. but i have not tried it yet.

I was hoping to receive more responses with alternatives, but I guess there's either a lack of quantifiable apps, or a lack of community support.

You could also try Cinelerra, though that is a bit hard to use, it has a lot of power.

you could install .. ubuntustudio-video & ubuntustudio-audio ,goto your synaptic manager (click system - administration - synaptic package manager and in the search bar type in ubuntustudio then tick the above mentioned packages then click apply.... this will download and install video and audio editors!

Blender (Video Sequence Editor) for video. Audacity for audio.

Cinelerra for video and audio.

linux sadly lacks a useable and stable video editor. I've tried kino (couldnt work out what it actually did) cinrella (wayyy to hard to use and ugly) kdenlive (crashed every 2 minutes) and open movie editor (hard to use).

All I want to do is make basic videos for youtube, but unfortunately nothing works

Blender (VSE) is very 'useable and stable'.

kdenlive is the closest thing to vegas, especially the newest version.

I've run Vegas Video 3 in a VirtualBox virtual machine to edit DV and encode to MPEG. Was very usable. Can't say if newer versions would work in a VM or not. Unfortunately the VV activation server for version 3 no longer exists so I had to resort to a pirate hack to activate it :( That's why I now refuse to buy activation required software and am trying to get everything on Linux.

I still keep a windows box for video editing and photoshop. While GIMP is good lack co color management and iffy photo printer support makes it more trouble than its worth for the time being to use Linux for these tasks where I just want ot use these apps and not futz with the computer!
