I used to have sound...

running ubuntu 8.10 ..

i had sound yesterday, sometimes amorak/vlc have conflicts together and i lose sound, i figured thats what happened which is normally fixed by a restart.

restarted 3x ish , still no sound - yet when i boot, i can hear the ubuntu .. "theme" and i can hear the music as well when i soft restart.

multimedia systems selector says autodetect: failed to connect: connection refused

and sound pref's say audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audio resample ! gconfaudiosink: Failed to connect: Connection Refused

.. how can i get my sound back.

also how can i make VLC default for my avi/mp3's etc.

try turn off the visual assistance in System>preference>session. I used to have the same problem. Hope this help

No 'visual assistance' here - but the same problem - updates killed sound, and even if I revert to the previous kernel, the sound is screwed. VLC plays okay, but everything else (except the drums to announce login) fail - after login, lots of nasty noise.:(
