Really want the ubuntu installer to recognize the cd

Got this when asking how to make a cd including the patch... "You need an existing PPC Linux machine to begin with - If you have an X86 one you want to check how to cross compile linux kernel on X86 machine to get a PPC kernel.
Integrating the patch in the kernel and building it - this is fairly simple. Get the Ubuntu kernel source package, apply the patches. Build using the same Ubuntu default .cofig.
Hard part is updating the ISO image to replace the Ubuntu provided kernel with the patched one - http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/273 can be helpful but you need to know what to replace and where - try asking that on Ubuntu forums as I am not really that well versed with Ubuntu."
