a little story

i had to do a rebuild of a customers computer, and they decided they wanted to try a dual boot with ubuntu and vista. everything was setup nicely for them, i gave them a quick tutorial of ubuntu and said goodbye.

7 months later i got a call from them telling me that the computer would not power on. sure enough, the power supply had died. i replaced the power supply and all was well. i booted into ubuntu to make sure it was still running OK. all was well. i then asked my customer how windows was running. their reply: "we don't know, we never use it." WOW. they said ubuntu does everything they need and more. their brand new HP all-in-one printer works beautifully, and so does the mp3 player they bought.

when people say that linux isn't ready for the masses, people like my customers prove that it is ready.

btw, i also have about 6 other customers that are very happy with their ubuntu installations. :p

It good to see that you don't have to be a rocket scientist to use linux. It might work for dummy like me:D

my next dual boot install will be my daughters laptop she is taking the perpetual pop up machine to the school IT guys. I told her she is probably due for a reload.

lafffsss I have seen this too. like my wife was scared to death to leave windows. now if you ask her..she says...windows who??!!?? we LOVE ubuntu!

i dual booted for my next door neighbor also, and the only reason he was booting into windows was to print. but now that i installed the gutenprint drivers and got it working, he has no real reason to use windows anymore. :p

Good thread. I just recently converted two colleagues to using Ubuntu full time. (Their only other choice was to use pirated Windows) Both of their printers worked OFTB- Hp and Canon. One is using LTS 64 and the other Intrepid. Side note-The more I talk to people about changing the more I realize software is like politics. IMHO many people are brainwashed.

exactly, sort of. but in the end, we're all brainwashed. i just happen to love linux and open source. it's what i do. it's gotten to the point where most of my new customers want linux and windows, but wind up using ubuntu more.

Even if people imply otherwise I always give them a small Windows partition in case they have to use something not available on Ubuntu. It doesn't matter to me what they use- but I sure enjoy it a lot when they go full time Ubuntu. I tell them I won't offer further support for the virus magnet.
