Help with starting out with a web server.

Hello,

I'm new to all this. I want to make a web server for my friend but at the time. Play around with it and make my own. How and where do I go from here?

I have Abyss running cause my mate suggested it. I got the webpage up and running. Fine. I was looking on the lines of Apache?

Can anyone point me in the right direction. Talk on msn?

Abyss is not free. I want Apache. Its open source etc. Is there a GUI to Apache?

And I want to get some information, tips - any help at all with web serving, websites etc.
