Anyone else a Gimp Arist?

Maybe I haven't looked around enough, but I haven't seen many original paintings by Gimp users on the forum. Then again, I'm not on the forums that often.

Here's something I've been working on for a couple of weeks. It is Carmine from the game Gears of War 2.

Just Ubuntu 8.10, Gimp, a Wacom Bamboo tablet, and a lot of free time.

The original is a full body shot 2000x3000 pixels. As you can tell, I haven't gotten to his gun ;)

looks really good mate. Is that ubuntu studios or just the theme? From first glance i'd guess it was done in a 3d program. Btw the bamboo penholder is crap. I know, I got one :D

No, it's not studio. The studio kernel doesn't work on my laptop. :( It's actually just regular ol' 8.10. I just like the Studio icon :P

Haha who cares about the pen holder? I'm usually just throwing the pen in random places anyway. I guess it would be nice if it attached to the tablet or something.

I'd consider myself a Gimp artist, at least in the sense that I prefer using Gimp over almost any other art programs.

I always, always check for a Gimp port whenever I switch OS'es. Kind of hope OpenSolaris will add 2.6 into their repos soon, but 2.5 is completely tolerable.

Don't be afraid to use a little sharpening. It looks a little blured. Use straight lines and some spherical brushes for industrial objects, there is no need to draw all by a hand.

Add more dramatic lights and shadows. Action illustration need hard lights and shadows for dramatic look. Frank Miller's style is extreme example of action illustrations style.

You have a tallent and potencial, just need some more experience to make first class illustrations. Really nice going work!

I use GIMP in a lot of my illustration http://www.longfire.net. However, I mostly use photoshop and painter but I gotta break in open source somehow. The soldier piece was virtually all GIMP/Inkscape except for color adjustments in shop. ;]

GIMP very much makes me miss Paint Shop Pro 6.

GIMP makes me miss Photoshop 7, which I find MUCH better because of layer effects on objects, rather than the WHOLE LAYER. Sure, there's fx-foundry, but after applying the effect, you can't edit it without undoing and reapplying the effect.

I'm a GIMP artist! I love it. I haven't used Photoshop but at my current skill level I can't imagine PS being worth the money considering the flexibility of GIMP. Browsing DeviantArt I've found a number of people using GIMP, so don't feel alone. There are tutorials as well, though, it doesn't look like you need one, minipalmer...

I love Inkscape as well - also Illustrator 10. And I prefer Inkscape for it's simplicity of use. Illustrator bugs me every time I use it now but I have to use it for compatibility reasons. :(

I am not quite an ''Artist'' with gimp,but I do make alot of siggies,avatars, and userbars with it :).

I like its layout too as it makes things so easy to do.

Last time I checked, my Photoshop 7 was pirated, so I threw it away many months ago. In fact, I've been pirated software free since... last December.

You may want to see if you can get a legal copy from e-bay, or call Adobe and see if you can buy a licence from them. I think 7 is the download in WINE-doors.
