I just saw this on lifehacker today and was wondering if anyone had tried it.
Apparently, it's openoffice...but faster.

I believe Ubuntu builds its OpenOffice from the Go-oo code.

That's right guys - Many big Linux distros (Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva, and others I believe) builds there openoffice *edition* upon Go-oo, since there's many features in the official OpenOffice.org suite, that could have been, but because if copyright this, and you can't do that thingies, Sun doesn't let those features get through to development, so if you wan't those features, you have to use Go-oo.
Not to say, that OpenOffice.org suite is a waste of time, cause without it, Go-oo wouldn't be anything, since the people behind Go-oo is all about adding features, while the folks at OpenOffice.org take care of the rest of the application. One could say that it's a very nice companionship ... not officially, though.
I guess that is probably the real reason why OOo 3 wasn't in Ubuntu 8.10 by default. It wasn't so much that Sun didn't come out with OOo soon enough, it was that Go-OO couldn't come up with their released based on Sun's release soon enough.
At least, that is my guess. I could be wrong. I just found out about Go-OO yesterday, so what do I know?
