What is a backport?

I don't understand what a backport is... What do you mean with this term?

Backport are the repositories with new updates for software (not supported by Ubuntu team)

Uhm... And in what do they differs from universe / multiverse repositories? As far as I got it, main repositories are the "official" ones, universe and multiverse with non-free content... and backports?

Backports are a community job. You have a whole subsection of this forum, where You can make requests for packages. Some of them will be backported.
