Running 8.10 x86 well on a Dell Inpiron 1720

I installed Ubuntu 8.10 x86 (32-bit) on my Dell Inspiron 1720 (4GB RAM, 160GB 7200 RPM drive, Core 2 Duo at 2.4GHz, multiple external USB drives - some ext3, some NTFS).

With the exception of some very minor glitches (most of which I caused :)), everything works great including, but no limited to:

webcam sound wifi printers (several) VMware Workstation 6.5.1 with an XP guest (for Outlook 2007, iPhone)

The only thing not working is hibernation/sleep. It either fails to save or fails to load later (sometimes one, sometimes the other).

64 bit solves a few of those problems, such as webcam and sound. Wifi can be easily fixed, so can printers. As for VMware, dunno what to say. Try using Wine for the specific programs or find an Linux alternative.

The items I listed ARE working.

The only thing I can't do is hibernate or sleep. Oh, and the webcam only seems to work in skype.

I tried x64 with 8.04 and had problems with the 32-bit stuff - acroread, skype, flash, etc. They seemed to work intermittently, particularly flash in firefox.
