I'm currently looking into a program called mailman.

From what I've managed to read it has a decent range as far as users being able to add / remove themselves from mailing lists if you so choose.
Works standalone from your mail server. IE - you send an email to an email address in Mailman and Mailman sends it to everyone on the list.

Yeah, I was just looking at mailman this afternoon. I think that's what I'm going for. My next hurdle is learning mailman and reverse engineering this majordomo box which was set up 8 years ago by someone who doesn't work here anymore. 0.o
