Video Cards & WINE

I wanted to ask if anyone knows what video cards are best supported with WINE for gaming because I plan on building a new pc for myself that will use the following hardware but I wanna know the best video card providers for Ubuntu/WINE before I get the card...

Ram - G.SKILL 4GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) 1 Stick to start out with but build it up to a max of 16GB over time.

CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W

So far this will be about $434.97 before taxes & S/H as I do most of my shopping online.

My current PC I use for gaming & graphics is as follows,

Ram - 4 x 1GB DDR400

CPU - P4 3GHz 1mb L2 800MHz FSB Socket 478

Video - ATi Radeon X1600 Pro 512mb AGP 8x

HD - 4 x 500GB 7200RPM 16MB Buffer / 1 20GB 7200RPM 8mb Buffer (Pri Master)

My current PC is great dont get me wrong it runs almost all of my Steam games just fine but I want more power & speed as well as more memory with more memory for my programming & design as well. I can run Steam in Ubuntu but have not yet tried to play any of the games in ubuntu because my damn motherboard keeps eating processors due to an error in the overclocking feature of my bios which wont let me turn it off & it has eaten 3 CPUs so far so yeah im over it...

So anyone have any ideas on video cards I am ATI all the way but I notice that Ubuntu doesnt like Ati & I have had many tell me that ATI isnt the best for WINE also... Anyone know?

Yes, you are correct, ATI is very buggy under linux compared to nvidia. The only people who are willing to buy ATI are Wine developers to try and help with the issues. For regular users who want stuff to just work nvidia is your best hope.

Alright well I guess until things get worked out Linux will be just used on my laptops or crash boxes because I cant even get Ubuntu to install on my new 500GB SATA drives doesnt even find a HD installed on the PC & I have 2 in right now so yeah as much as I love Ubuntu I dont love it enough to go back to EIDE or buy video cards from nvidia cause I hate nvidia cards so thank you for the reply...

PS: The sad reality is that while Microsoft may rip you off in many ways & be very unstable it is the easiest & most supported OS out there right now for gamers like myself as well as for those of us that grew up on DOS, Windows, and hasn't used anything else. Linux is a completely different world then Windows because not only is it confusing to someone that is new to it but it also requires that you know & understand commands to install programs and other content & its a bitch trying to find things to compensate for the programs & games you want to play that require a Windows OS. Yes WINE is awesome but even wine doesn't support all the games out there & few on mt Steam account in which I have invested about 600+ USD on already. I very much wanna do away with Windows & Microsoft completely but till things are better supported both software & hardware I have no choice but to stick with Microsoft.

Wine or not, nVidia is the way to go if you plan on gaming in Linux. While AMD (ATI) have significantly improved their drivers recently and provide most of the same features as nVidia, in the 3d performance department nVidia is still light years ahead.

If you give me an idea of the price range and upto how many watts you can support, I can name a good graphics card for you.

Here's a good graphics card, a GF 9500GT, which only uses about 50 watts of power. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814162022 $75 - $10 rebate) Note that unlike other 9500GT cards, it actually has a decent memory speed.

Yeah I took a look at NewEgg.com for those nVidia cards & I found this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125270 which looks pretty sweet though I was going to go with a 2GB Ati because I had XP on my PC again but I am trying to stress it out with Ubuntu right now to try to find as many fixes for all the bugs, and problems so that I can stick with it so I don't end up playing musical OSes.

So far I am having no problems with my video which is onboard this motherboard & its ATI.

isn't the 2GB ati really only 1GB because its like 2 cards on one board?

I would really recommend staying clear of ATI unless you are a programmer.

I do program, but I prefer ATI over Nvida any day so I am sticking with Ati... Also I have Ati onboard by default which really works fine but I just want more out of it for Gaming purposes, programming, and multimedia. Keep in mind that I don't just use Linux so I am not going to do away with my video preferences for linux because most of my games & content isn't supported by Linux yet & I am doubting that demand will ever change out of Microsoft though honestly I wish it would.
