Dell Monitors issue

I have a two month old Dell Inspiron 1525 and want to use the laptop in a docking station when at my home office, under an external monitor. Just not enough space on my desk for two monitors. I contacted Dell and they said that in their new computers this is no longer a feature, that when you close the laptop the external monitor shuts off too. They told me there is no work around, but I find that hard to believe. If anyone has an idea for a workaround that would be great!

Laptops do not have the same cooling as desktops. They can get very warm when the lid is shut. For this reason they are best left open when they are on.
