Wow Ubuntu just really impressed me

I've been using Ubuntu since 6.06 and generally it has done what I need with ease, gradually more so with each version, but something just happened that really impressed me with 8.10

I connected my phone (Sony K800i) up to my PC to transfer some files onto it when Ubuntu flashed up saying "mobile broadband device detected" all I had to do was click the bubble, select my provider and I was online. I didn't even know you could do that! awesome.

Wasting huge amounts of money by using mobile web connection without realising it has never been so easy ;) Pretty impressive on Ubuntu's part though ... Rock on !

Nice to hear Ubuntu is getting better in the networking department though :D But as xzoky said, beware of the costs of using your phone in such a manner! I got stung on my phone bill last month (though it was too many SMS messages, I already have unlimited data) :(

I never thought it would do that now I'll have to try it.

for those of you in the USA with AT&T DSL you also get "free" * Wayport and AT&T hot spot wireless lan [any McDonalds parking lot] I tried it and both were working all one needs is ones main e-mail for a log on and its password. [for wayport one has to scroll down to the AT&T icon]

boo my phone doesn't do it, as soon as I plug in the USB it shuts the transmitter and receiver off. Samsung Instinct it is a great phone but I wish I could use it for mobile broadband Internet. Should we try to compile a list of phones that will work in such a mannor?

Heh, yeah, I noticed the same thing a while ago when plugging in ye olde K750i. Wickedly easy to get connected compared to Windows, where you have to add AT strings and commands manually. I guess the props go to the Network Manager guys.

Yeah you got that right, on my current plan Orange charge £3/MB for data! time for a change methinks
