I just recently got a person to come out and fix my computer because windows was ate up with viruses. He recomended linux. So here i am. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me some easy step by step directions on how to install java so that i may play runescape. thank you.

Well, you need to have a 32-bit architecture for it, so depending on your processor, you can usually figure this out. All you need for runescape is Java. If you are on ubuntu simply go to runescape.com, click the play now button, and when the pop-up comes from your web browser to install an add-on, click it and it should simply install to your system like that. firefox sucks at runescape, you should install opera from their official website. Then google > medibuntu and add medibuntu repository to your sources.list .After that install :
sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-jre sun-java6-jdk
Let me direct you to my guide I made a while back. I'm not sure if it works in Intrepid, I think I only tested it in Hardy, but it should probably work. Will work in 64 bit and 32 bit. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=914871 And no need for Opera, actually Java never works right for me in Opera :-P At least in 64 bit.

Hi and welcome. To install Java, click on this link: clicky. Then restart Firefox, and runescape should be working.

I find synaptic the easiest to use. (system->administration->synaptic package manager->search "sun java"->Download whatever you think is relevent xD)
