I'm sure this can't be backported due to the fact that nothing newer is in Dapper. I checked Debian's archives as well, nothing seems to be happening with this package. So, I downloaded the latest SPE and, since I wanted a deb package for package management, I installed and used checkinstall. It worked fine, giving me a deb package that I installed at work also. I also removed python-wxglade and kiki since they are included with SPE.

From now on SPE will be available as .deb packages from its website. Download latest version at http://pythonide.stani.be From release 0.8.1.e SPE will be optimized for Ubuntu, see http://pythonide.stani.be/blog. Help is welcome. Thanks!
