splash screen freezes with _ubuntu 8.10

I've had this issue with ubuntu and kubuntu as well, so I guess this would be a simple ubuntu issue. When I boot up, the system locks up at the spash screen, which I can fix by simply holding down any key on the keyboard. Once the back and forth motion finishes and it starts to grow, it boots fine. It also shuts down fine. I installed Opensuse 11.0 awhile ago, and no freeze. Any help?
