Two weeks after install pop up a survey.

I think it might get a better gauge on adoption rates and user satisfaction.

Say after about 14 days a window pops up that says something like:

"Improve Ubuntu, Let us know what you think"

Have a few radio buttons next to some questions.. and a comment section for those that need to let off a little steam.

Well, I know if that happened to *me* on Ubuntu, I would hate it. Instead, I think we should use what Fedora uses to get statistics.

I'm going to have to go -1 on this. If I got a popup window like that I'd wonder which [expletive deleted] former Microsoft employee was responsible for that [expletive deleted] thing, and I've loved Ubuntu for the past 2 years since I left Windows for it. While I like the idea we need a much more subtle implementation than a popup, but not so subtle that a lot of users would miss it. Perhaps if we had an option at the end of the install (and perhaps even upgrade) process to request the user's permission to do it after however long it could work, but to do it without an opt-out ahead of time could easily be seen as being pretty intrusive.

How does Fedora do it?

That does seem like a better idea. Hopefully the person would remember that they ok'ed it at the end of the install. Now there does not seem to good way to know how many people install Ubuntu and what their experience has been so far.

I agree that just having the survey pop up would probably provoke a conditioned response based on the abuses that people were subjected to in the past.

It uses smolt to track who uses Fedora on what machine and how it is working. I don't think anything else is really needed.

Think in another way. if you get this statistics you can do more improvement to ubuntu. i take the another way round good.

Dunno. Ubuntu devs don't care? :p

Probably because they'd need to arrive at a solution that wouldn't tick off their users. I've never seen how Fedora does it but I suspect the Ubuntu devs have had other things on their plate so far. Have you posted an idea on Ubuntu Brainstorm about this yet? That, or a feature request/bug filled on Launchpad would be the best way to let the devs know you'd like to see it.
