Migrating from 32bit.

HI there!

I have Ubuntu 5.10 32bit installed and all is working fine, with kernel 2.6.12-10-k7. After switchinging off some services I don't need (pcmica and so on) my system boots quite fast (I would say round 35-40sec from grup to log in) and feels fast and stable after having logged in.

My question is: should I migrate to the 64 bit version considering that I have to configure everything again? Is it worth the time? Will automatix still work? Vmware?

If anyone can help... I'm not sure at all if "wasting" time in downloading and installing the 64bit and setting up everything I still have working properly now.

If it helps, I have an Asus A8V-e deluxe mobo, an Athlo64 3200+ with 1 gig dual channel ram and a 160gigs HDD dual booting with win xp and a fat32 partition.

well, the answer is it all depends: do you need anything in 64 bit? From what you say probably not. Is it worth the effort to configure? well there is a bit more than that. There's a good chance that stuff won't work, like some Firefox plugins realplayer, and other stuff. if you look through this forum and Hoary 64bit before it, you'll see that we've all had our share of problems.

I run the 64bit platform because Ihave some IT savy and feel that if I can't make the effort, then no one can. If no one does, then there will never be a 64bit linux, and we'll all have to fall back to that other proprietary, low service, so called OS...

It's a lot of effort, if you want all your hardware to work at top performance - some things just will not work, like Kino. But then you can always make a 32bit chroot that will take care of most - but not all - problems.

Finally, you may be surprised to know that many packages available for 32bit are simply not available in 64bit, and cannot be built by hand either...

All that to say, without any reason to move, I wouldn't, unless you're an adventurer and ready to pay with your time...
