FreeBSD needs support from the Ubuntu community

I know BSD and Linux distributions don't exactly have too good of history but as many people don't know FreeBSD doesn't have a native flash player and I'm trying to do something about it. I'm looking for people who would like to form a group to spark media interest about how Adobe refuses to acknowledge FreeBSD. I personally dual-boot Ubuntu and FreeBSD but it really limits OSs such as PC-BSD and DesktopBSD who aim to make FreeBSD a simple desktop replacement. All I'm asking is if people would like to help, even if they don't use FreeBSD to PM or e-mail me at [email]citsakots@gmail.com[/email] so we could plan out how to gather some media attention.

As a FreeBSD user, I personally don't have an issue with no native Flash support form Adobe. If I need Flash, Linux compatibility takes care of it for me.

The latest versions of flash don't seem to work properly on FreeBSD (many crashes), so I guess it would be nice to have a version of Adobe Flash built specifically for the BSDs.

I mostly use FreeBSD as a server, so I rarely have need for a desktop, much less Flash. However, I find the older versions of Flash or the Flash Player alternatives work fine.

I understand that MANY people don't care about flash because they don't like it, or maybe don't use it too much but this whole thing isn't about that. It's about FreeBSD getting the attention it deserves. I truly think FreeBSD has been around for long enough, especially with it's reputation for being a stable and amazing OS for it not to be supported with something that is very basic for a common desktop OS. I don't use flash too much either except for YouTube but that's not the reason why I'm doing this.

Well, it is rumored that Flash is coming to FreeBSD (and you can get Flash 9 working through the linuxulator now).

I don't know. That blog post you showed me seemed like a fake. The poster didn't even spell Ubuntu right :S. He/She spelled it "Unbunu Linux".

Flash 7 works fine for me, but I think the main problem now is that many sites want Flash 9. The last time I tried Flash 9, it would cause my web browsers to crash. I have not tried it recently, so I am not sure if anything has changed.

It works alright although I see it pretty simple. Why should Flash be emulated through Linux or WINE when it should have it's own native version of Flash.:confused:

Probably just a typo. The guy is a senior Flash engineer for Sony and an Adobe user group manager, so he's a reasonably qualified source. Here's another:

Tinic Rocks!

For those that don’t know Tinic Uro, he is one of the masterminds behind the Flash Player. His blog is a must-read for anyone developing in Flash as it is chock-full of inside information directly from the Flash team. Tinic actually fixed a Flash Player bug live on stage. He started out in Visual Studio and showed the actual C++ source code for Flash Player 10. This was very cool to all the developers in the audience. He then proceeded to show Flash Player 10 running on FreeBSD and also a 64-bit version running on Linux. I can’t say anything more on this so please don’t ask when they will be released :). After his session was done he took questions from the audience for a little while.

Thank you for posting that article. Hopefully it won't be long before Flash is available natively on FreeBSD because the article is around 2-3 months old. I'm still going to go forward with this project because I would like to get in contact with someone from Adobe telling me an approximate release date because there is still the chance that they won't release it at all.
