[SOLVED] can anyon efind a spae minutte to help me a bit. thanks

hi. i was sitting at home last night when some one i know came around with a windows xp install with virus in it and asked if i could fix the virus and and wireless by today so that she could use it for class by tonight . i said i might but i really do not know how to fix this wirerless. its a acer aspire 3050 and i downloaded the drivers needed from the acer website as i have reinstalled the whole thing. the problem is that when i try to install drivers it installs and still cant find the drivers and then most times it just suddenly gives a blue screen of death and quits.

anyone has an idea what to do. it would save a kids chance of doing homework and maybe give those who help a good karma for helping :)

i've had a similar problem in such before. everyonce in awhle certain factors in an installation can go bad. most likely in your case when windows was installed it didn't allocate the .dll or .cab directory right. i've had the same problem to where windows will run but only for a short time once it recognizes all the pieces of hardware and doesn't find em compliant. i would suggest using the windows repair feature inside the installation disk.

thanks for the reply. the first thing the owner of the laptop did was have her brother try repair it. it did not work. then they reinstalled using their cd which they got seperate. and that did not work so they came to me. in fact the repair feature makes it worse wiht this bluescreen. i have managed to install a driver and it finds a broadband wireless now. i can not set it up as i do not know how it is done. ohter than that it is now stopped giving me blue screens. but ther eis a bunch of hardware that it is not finding. i do not think i have the guts to try repair it since it was really not doing any good the first time. i think there is some OEM data erased from the disk when tehy had tried to do format and reinstall them self. that should be on a cd when you buy the computer i should think but people do not get that with them anymore for some reason. can i find the right stuff for it on a website anywhere. and burn on a cd for them. ?? thanks for the time.

best bet would be if the computer has a license(a sticker on the bottom of the pc with a windows serial key) go to a nearest pc retailer and ask them for a burned copy of the OS you need. most of the time they only charge 5$ at the most from what i've seen and they'll inform you that it requires the license to work.

if you have fully reinstalled the operating system, this should get rid of the virus, whereas just a repair install won't. if you have fully reinstalled, then you will need to download and install all the drivers for all the hardware necessary from acer support before all the hardware will be recognized, eg, graphics, sound, wireless, whatever else. also, sometimes drivers will not work correctly unless the windows install is updated, eg, xp sp2 has a lot more support for drivers than pre sp2. i would update windows to the latest as soon as possible after a fresh install, maybe try the blue-screening drivers again after an update, and they may work ok then!

yes i already told them to that. trouble is that she needs it by tonight for doing some very important home work so a quick fix is what is the most pressuring problem. it is exam. so they have to use the computer and the wireless to get it done as school demands this odf them as i understand (i dont but...) it to be. i dont think it is a fair thing to say that one has to own a laptop with wireless to go to school but they say its like that. so i am in trouble with wireless for the time being. i keep trying and i see some progress by now. it does not black out or run slobby anymore. but the wireless is still abscent.

You say that the laptop is now able to find a broadband wireless notwork. so now all you need to do is log in to any network that you are authorized to use. So if you know the password you can connect.

You can also use the laptop cd to install the drivers one by one. For being thorough you can reboot after every driver install.

hmm, in windows, a quick fix is sometimes rare! i don't know a great deal about wireless in windows, but if the wireless card is showing up in device manager, and the drivers are installed ok, then check whether the windows 'wireless zero config service' is enabled in 'services' you can check the 'services' through 'admin tools' in the 'control panel' (going from memory!). some laptops also require the wireless to be turned on either by a switch, or a key combination.

there is also maybe a possibility that the wireless card is faulty, you could maybe try testing with a live-cd and see if it is picked up ok then.

i never configured wireless before. but in ubuntu there seems to be a working wireless frm the live cd. and maybe i can get it working on windows. i have to work a bit on it however. thanks for time everyone. i may post again here in this tread to update a little later since i have to get back to work and walk my dog also. but thanks again.

i got it to work so much as i could after downloading and installing all the drivers that was on the acer website for this model. i have returned it today and i hope they can have it working well enough for doing the exam tonight. thanks for all the help.
