I was going to post a question about Ubuntu and Intel 64 bit architecture but I've since read that our amd_64 encompasses both intel and amd architectures.
Intel users, what is ubuntu like with intel dual and quad cores ? The new i7 architecture has got me intent on switching intel. I'm hoping to build an i7 maching by the end of next year..
I've got an Intel Quad Core running on 64 Bit, it's awesome :-) Seriously, the horror stories you hear about 64 bit just aren't true (as far as I have experienced anyway!)
Me too, I started using ubuntu a little after Hardy's release and I've only ever used x64. I've never had the problems anyone else talks about. It's always been smooth fast sailing. My AMD runs sweet, but i7 seems crazy....

i personally am an AMD user, just upgraded to Quad 9950 (2.6ghz) with 4gb ram) and i have absolutley no problems with the 64bit. I came from Dual core 4200+ athlon X2 running 32-bit with 1gb ram. Everything is so smooth, even using alpha flash player for the 64bit. I am doing a lot more with the 64bit system as far as modified desktop, more customizations, and it runs smoother than my 32bit X2 ever thought about running. No problems yet. I was curious about the 64bit switch just like you are, but i dont regret it one bit.
EDIT: And im still new to Ubuntu. Going on 3 or 4 weeks of use. Im really tempted to delete my entire windows partition. Just trying to find something that can auto sync ipod and do as well as itunes does first.
Banshee beats the hell out of iTunes! (depending what iPod you have, check out gtkpod, although Banshee can manage your iPod for you... http://www.gtkpod.org/about.html

I currently have an x2_64 dual core, 1 gig 667mhzDDR2 so i'm a 64 user like you :) but i'm thinking about intel's i7 processors. I'm pretty surprised that i7 only takes ddr3 but i can appreciate the forward thinking of intel.
As for itunes, if you don't get something you can replace it with in linux you could try WINE
or something like VirtualBox
I run XP in Vmware just so i can use my microdia webcam with skype. Skype is actually the only program i'm waiting for native 64 bit support for...
I'm running a Dell laptop with a core duo processor. I bought it specifically to run linux on it & hadn't even started it's XP install when it arrived! Ubuntu 8.04 installed SO easily. I'm a kubuntu user, so ended up having to not use the kubuntu install disk. apt-get installed flash onto firefox no problems.
This machine flies with anything computational, too.

8.04 has been so stable for me, I haven't really bothered to run the frequent updates or get 8.10. Maybe when 9,04 comes around, I'll be ready to update... and then I always wait a few weeks in case something blows up.

Me too (a Dell XPS M1530). Mine has a T9300 (2.5 GHz, with 6 MB processor cache). 64-bit Ubuntu 8.04 works great on it.

It's actually a good thing that the on-processor cache is shared between the cores, because that means that both cores can see what the other core writes to the cache (which means the processor has to go to the relatively slow main memory less).
I have a Phenom quad core and an Intel dual quad, both running Intrepid and can tell you, the system does everything far better than my Vista x64. Its well worth the effort.

Been looking at prices on tigerdirect, existing quad prices are gonna rocket down with the advent of i7. I'm still broke though :) so i'll save and build for christmas next year!
Hope one of you guys gets his/her hands on an i7 soon though...Then i can live vicariously through you :)

Haha, i really am close. I installed songbird 1.0 last night, but still need to work on setting it up completely to get my ipod syncs close to the way my itunes is, then i will be happy, and then delete it.
