Ubuntu Vs Windows XP Vs Windows Vista - performance and speed

I am assuming that Vista is doing some sort of Malware / Virus scan on the files as it is unzipping them which isn't necessarily a bad thing for a windows machine to do. Whereas XP probably doesn't by default (unless you have a scanner) and ubuntu doesn't need to.

When I used Vista I used it once to unrar a 700mb archive, it did the job just as fast a Ubuntu does.

vista came preinstalled on my laptop which was fine for awhile and it probably takes a good 2-3 minutes to boot. ubuntu boot isn't much faster but everything seems to open much quicker. in vista it would load for about 30 seconds just to open word or my computer.

I find it hard to understand that anyone can believe this kind of speed difference is valid. Yes Vista is slow but it certainly is not THAT slow. I can't believe someone actually made a video comparing the OSes transfer files. In fact I can't believe I spent time watching it even though I did skip quite a lot of it!

Anyway these kind of comparisons mean very little to me. How much time do you spend configuring Ubuntu compared to how much time you spend configuring and learning about Vista?

Don't get me wrong, I'm no Windows lover (quite the opposite), but this comparison (I still can't believe someone went to the trouble to make a video of that) is worse than wrong - just silly and embarrassing.

It's simple truth that linux is faster at file transfer operations than Vista. I can transfer 1Gb files from one hard disk to another in Ubuntu in about half the time Vista does.

However, Vista is good at a lot of other things and BOTH Vista and Ubuntu ARE resource dependent.

If we switchout some hardware, Vista on Core 2 Duo 2Gb simply spanks Ubuntu on Via C3 512Mb at transferring files.

This workstation - stretch video across all monitors and play it in windows vista 64 = CHOPPY - BAAAAD an slows vista to a crawl at many points doing multiple things at once.

Mondern hardware needs an efficient OS just as much as old hardware does. Vista fails.

By the way I fell out of my chair, picked myself back up, and fell right back outa my chair again, then laughed, then looked at my monitors for about 5 minutes in shock from this statement. > However, Vista is good at a lot of other things Only thing vista has been good for is to give our clients a reason to look for alternatives to windows! Actually to finally remove all the crap that vista comes with to get it to run 1/2 way decent atleast the same if not more time wasted. UAC, Windows Defender, Windows Search, etc, etc, then top that off with all the trialware a store bought or prefab PC or notebook comes with and you have yourself a brand new computer performing worse than my 3 year old amd64 running Windows XP. There is a reason vlite and nlite are so popular :) - its the only way to get any bit of actual performance out of those bloated windows. Windows.. hell they should just change the damn name to HOUSE because its not just the windows anymore. (ok bad joke).

Total crap. Compressing =/= Extracting!! If you actually watch the video tha's why Vista is so terribly slow. I bet it'd be similar to XP's time if he time the extracting on Vista.
