Eyes wide open

Three scenarios:

1. You spend the whole of your life blindfolded. This is Microsoft Windows.

1. You cut eye holes in your blindfold. This is Ubuntu.

1. You rip the blindfold off, gain super vision, and see everything there is to see. This, my friends, is Kubuntu.

I've been a loyal Ubuntu fan, but a mixture of boredom and curiosity led me to install Kubuntu in VirtualBox yesterday, which led me to giving it my whole hard drive today, wiping out Ubuntu completely.

Yeah I know they're the same, except for a handful of programs and the GUI, and that's what I mean. I seriously recommend any of you who have yet to try Kubuntu to download Kubuntu 8.10 and give it a whirl.

I mean...use whatever you like and whatever is best for you, but I still think you should try it out. :)

Ubuntu is really Ubuntu, you can always choose your favorite DE/WM inside of Ubuntu

Glad that you enjoy KDE. KDE just feels so much more integrated than Gnome, and I say this as someone who used to be a Gnome stalwart.

The last time I tried to add KDE Desktop to my Ubuntu install I hit so many problems that I ended up wiping the HDD completely and reinstalling Ubuntu. Of course, that was 5 or 6 months ago, before KDE 4 started coming around, so maybe the problems are fixed, or maybe they were simply hardware-specific. I don't know.

But yeah, this latest version is awesome. Still a few bugs, but the whole thing looks so much better than Gnome that the bugs are tolerable.

Not knocking Gnome, of course. It's a great Desktop system. It just needs to evolve, I think.

In all honesty though, I think my favorite part of the whole thing is that the bottom panel bar doesn't have to be 100% across the screen. Yeah you can do that in Gnome, too, but it always borks the icons when it boots up.

Anyhoo...I love this KDE stuff. :)

It does feel a lot more integrated. But I guess I'm not being entirely fair, either; I upgraded from Gnome on Hardy to KDE on Ibex. I'm not sure if the new release of the Ubuntu core makes a difference or not. But I sort of am comparing apples to...applesauce, or something. Same thing, but different.

As someone who is on Ibex Gnome, no there is not much of a difference. I am contemplating on installing Kubuntu now, or wait till later, or install Arch(Chakra). Blargh..

I agree. Of course, I've never used a Mac, so I can only look at the pictures online...but I think KDE looks awesome.

As for Compiz...alas, I have an ATI video card. No Compiz for me, unless I want to lose the ability to use 3d and watch movies. :(

I don't like all the resources compiz takes up and all the bugs it has, so I get by without it :)

to each their own. i personally can't stand kde4. sure, it looks ok, but find it to be a work in progress. kde3.5 was tolerable, but for me, gnome does everything i need and more.

And that's the beauty of it. Like you said, to each their own.

Personally, Gnome did everything I wanted it to do, too. I just like the aesthetics. :)

I didn't like KDE 3.5, but it was my first DE. Maybe I had a bad experience, but the sheer number of apps some distros installed were just ridiculous. 3 audio players, 3 media players, ect. It looked fine, but it was the "%^%$^-storm" that threw me off.

I agree. KDE4 is much better since they've got most of the bugs worked out of it.

I'm not very familiar with the Mac set up, so I think I'll hit the Web and see if I can find a video or two, maybe some screens.

And my desktop would look much better, as well, with Compiz. If I knew how to take a screenshot, I'd post mine. Sadly, I haven't gotten 'round to looking it up yet. :P

Not really a valid comparison, considering the same key combination in Gnome also brings up a run dialog. Enter "gnome-screenshot --interactive", and there you have it.

Well I don't know if my system is unique, but in Ubuntu 8.10 I can just press print screen button the keyboard, bickety-bam screenshot interface come up.

Seems faster than all of the above mentioned methods.

I'm not sure he was comparing them, but rather telling me how to do it. I knew how to do it in Gnome, but am still new to KDE, and had never heard of ksnapshot. I mentioned in a previous post that if I knew how to take a screenshot, I'd post one.

He was telling me how to do that. :) At least, I assumed that's what it was. :P

I'm using kde4 exclusively now, and I couldn't remember the name of the gnome screenshot program, but I remembered where it was. I realize you can alt-f2 in gnome.
