Ubuntu rocks

I dual boot xp with Ubuntu. The wife refuses to use Ubuntu and will not let me buy another laptop so i can have Ubuntu on my laptop and hers and can have xp. Well i spent the last three days trying to set up my new sprint Broadband Usb card on xp. It was a nightmare. many calls to Sprint tech support,( they were very nice and cooperative). I strated out with xp setting it up and when i booted to Ubuntu the card was already set up and i just clicked as the wireless option it worked right off the bat. I love this Operating system it is so easy to use and just down right fine. Now to convince the wife. Just wanted to relay the experience

I had the same experience with setting up wireless. Damn easy. Also, adding printers is even easier.

I second that. Installed last week. Only small problem with sound but that was a simple fix.

good to hear. if the wife won't use ubuntu, just refuse to fix xp when it breaks.

in my household, it's not what she wants, but what i want. therefore we use linux. good luck to you and enjoy ubuntu.

Step 1: Setup Windows to backup all the wife's important files to the Ubuntu partition every 24h. Step 2: Remove any anti-virus protection. Step 3: ??? Step 4: Profit!!

that is why in my opinion it's okay for whomever to choose whatever software, os , ....

so why forcing someone or doing harm on them like ncli suggested?

there are always good reasons for something, and might it only be not to learn something new/again.

p.s.: simply quit the job as xp admin (due to u ain't got time to do both)

You are absolutely right. They can choose to run whatever OS they want.

BUT I also have a choice. AND *_I_* choose not to work on, repair or fix winsucks systems. In the rare case that I have to work on a winsucks system I charge treble what I would otherwise charge. Call it hazerdous duty pay.

1. Wives are notorious for stopping their husbands buying silly new toys that they more than likely don't need. I have one of my own; she's the same way. :P

1. This OS is very easy to use, and it does a lot of things better than its bigger competition (Windows, Mac).

1. Thanks for sharing the experience. It's nice to log in, especially to the Testimonials and Experiences forum, and see a positive review/experience. I feel bad for those having a hard time, and I like to think that the positive posts help the frustrated users stay committed to working out the bugs, rather than giving up.

thanks for all the advice about the wife. next time when winsucks breaks down i am going to tell her i can't fix it. hse'll hav eto use ubuntu by default.

Not all Wives fit this profile. Mine of 28 years does not. I buy the toys I want. As long as we can afford them. If not I wait til we can or until i find a screamin deal. Case in point, I recently bought an EEEPC. I did not Need it per se I just wanted it. At the going rate of about 300.00 I just could not justify buying it. Then I found one for under 150.00. It had Japanese XP on it. Sweet I intended to put Ubuntu on it anyway. I got it for 165.00 including shipping. Had less than 10 hrs operaring time on it. 48 hrs after delivery it was running on Ubuntu EEE. and the rest as they say is history.

On the flip side of this, My Wife collects dolls. If she wants a doll and we can afford it , she gets it. A couple years ago we were in Lordsburg NM on vacation. We were wandering around "antique stores" and other various purveyors of questionable merchandise. We had gone into one that had various dolls and doll parts. While she took her time looking at the various parts and dolls I went outside to have a smoke.

A few minutes later my Wife came out with the saucer eyes that indicate that either she has found something special or run into a person that to her is larger than life, ( the first time I saw "those eyes" was when she met Roy Rogers at a gun show).

I asked whats up? She said," He has a Madam Alexander doll. He only wants 45.00." Ok I dont know SA**** about dolls. But I do recognize Madam Alexander as a premier maker, So I ask, " are you sure"? Dumb question. Of course she is sure, she has checked all the marks and such and all without the owner of the store having a clue.

So says I " well buy it. we have the money, if you want it , buy it."

So she gets what she wants and I get what I want. Works well.

If the owner of the pc is the wife then the wife gets to choose which operating system to use. After 40 years of marriage I've found attempting of compel my wife to do anything can be a slippery slope. In that your using Linux/Ubuntu will encourage her, especially when she realizes how few problems your having.

I installed Ubuntu on my wifes pc (duel boot), forgot and left it in Ubuntu and when she went to use it, didn't notice the difference and that was a few years back and she still hasn't said anything. All she does is email and shopping and was using Opera for a browser - same as she was using in Windows.
