I don't want another flavor of ubuntu.
I have been messing around with other distros, and always have come back to here. But one this I liked about other distros, is their speed.
Arc Linux is optimized for i686 and boots incredably fast, but couldn't get my keyboard to work.
Gentoo is compiled on your machine, but network can't load.
Slackware is fast stable, but difficult to work with.
I propose that Ubuntu have a version that installs only the basic of drivers, and core components. Even less that server edition. And you can compile your own kernel, or choose a very small core kernel. It should boot fast, too. This could be done with less drivers and compiled on your machine software.
Gentoo compiles all your software on your machine, this makes it fast to boot and run, but slow to install. We should give the choice of how much software to compile on the machine. Like core, desktop, media, drivers, kernel, etc. This would make it possible to have a system very devoted to a certian cause.
