Before trying Ubuntu, doing anything in a command line environment would have terrified me to the core, but now I am confident enough to rescue my system in a non-X terminal if things go wrong.

And that, my friend, is a skill you can use in pretty much any *nix OS :)

In a perfect world, I wouldn't have to tinker around without an X environment.

At least with gnome-terminal, I have the Internet at my disposal in another window.

Very true, and I think we've all noticed that this happens less frequently now than a year ago. Bugs are fixed and GUIs implemented every day.
