Ubuntu v windows and education!

Well, i tried mandrake quite a few years back, most frustrating point was i couldn't get the modem to work. Something which is a must for and system for updates at least! Anyway, now on Ubuntu 8.10. It is great, no real problem, few small ones but who hasn't with windows! My kids are badgering me to install it on there PC. After install i created my 2 kids a login so they can't change anything, told then the logins and passwords, said i'd tell them later how to use it. 2 days later they are asking me to install on their pc, i said i must tell you how to use it first, they both said no problem, we already used it. (they are 12 and 8) Really can't see why people like windows, actually annoys me that schools treat it as the only way to do computing. One school we looked at for my daughter (change at 11 years here) the headmaster would talk of windows and MS so much it put me off! He was harping on about how good his computer education was, forgetting about the world outside MS! So (red!) hats off to you all, and keep it up, i'm sure the tide is turning for Linux systems. Yeah people are coming around to Linux. But I'm hoping it doesn't take over the market (which isn't likely; Microsoft simply has too much money); otherwise it'll be commercialized and totally ruined.

But I must say, it's almost there. Fix the little glitch with Compiz and ATI (which everybody says is ATI's fault, but I suspect it's Compiz's), and the wireless issues (which *are* the hardware manufacturers fault) and there's no legitimate reason why (K)Ubuntu shouldn't be considered a viable competitor for the desktop market.
