Sticky question

Why was http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=726219 replaced with http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1006656 ? I realize that LaRoza is banned, but besides that, it's almost exactly the same. There is nothing about LaRoza being banned that invalidates that sticky.

Strange indeed. Looks like banning his history as well.

I think they would have preferred changing the "owner" of the thread but this version doesn't support it so I assume they had to change threads.

NOTE: I am not commenting on the reasons for this ban, or if this person should or should not to have been banned.(Nor should any one else).

Having all the stickies posted by a person with "burnt beans" doesn't look good. It begs the question to the validity of the threads/links in question.

I also noticed this change this morning as well. I guess we should all update our sigs now.

Not removing the history, those posts have not been jailed, They are still great posts and very helpful. But is doesn't look great to have stickies by a member that is banned.

So they want to remove great posts (nobody would have dug up that old thread had it not been stickied) because they "don't look good"?

1) Only one person has direct db access UG(I think), fiddling manually in the DB is NEVER a great idea with very large scale applications as you don't know what other things it might break/change with logging/stats/anything. I am quite sure none of the admins have very very in depth knowledge on how the forum software code works(and they do not need to!) the only time I would ever edit live databases is on applications I have developed or had a large part in developing and know the implication of what I have done.

2) They weren't made by one person. They were just links to other threads.... (This was explained to me by a mod) I don't see this as a huge issue.

Nothing really changed - just the thread number and the user who posted it. There are no replies to either of them, so I don't really see what the big deal is. Unless bodhi.zazen wanted to bump up his post count or give himself a noticable post - I don't think that is why though The red in his name makes him stand out already, just like drubin's green makes him stand out as well.

Rather, I think the reason the topic was remade was to allow for easier editing, as the only reason a post should be edited by someone other than the user who made it is to clean inappropriate content. This way, people won't assume that LaRoza wrote the entire thing, even though Rocket2DMn (or some other staff/mod/admin) was the one who edited it.

Also, drubin pointed out the other reason: It doesn't look good to have a sticky originally posted by a member who is now banned.

There is an 'edited by' notice at the bottom..

We have been talking about a Staff account, or Admin account to post such general help threads. They are collaborative efforts anyway, so it does not really matters who posts them (I personally favor the generic account over Staff members posting announcement or help stickies. Edit: I know Bodhi does too).

I have mixed feelings about this... Forums are user generated even if this particular didn't obtain all the information they have taken the time to write this thread in order to share it.. For this I think they deserve some credit.

Maybe it is a good idea maybe not..

But the one thing for sure is this means that no standard user would ever have the ability to have their thread stickied and them get the credit for their hard work.

I think the general idea is for announcements that the staff would make. If for example nathangrubb posted something that we wanted to be a sticky, we wouldn't repost it under a different account.

So users still have the exact same opportunity to get things stickied :)
