An FPS with a real, actual campaign?

I know all about the great multiplayer games available for linux. The problem is that I'm not into multiplayer all that much, but I love single-player FPSs. Are there are available for linux? And I mean games with a real single player campaign with a story and all that fun stuff (not Nexuiz). I'm not going to hold my breath here, but I look forward to any replies.

Well, Penumbra might be interesting? Not at all a "traditional" FPS, but it has an interesting single-player mode. Also, there are two expensions (Black Plague and Requiem): http://www.penumbra-overture.com/

Prey was recently ported to GNU/Linux: http://icculus.org/prey/

I don't know, but Quake 4 or Doom 3 could perhaps be interesting too? And if you do not demand the "latest", you have Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

I've already played through Penumbra, I found those games to be great, in case anyone is wondering.

I'll definitely give Prey a shot, and maybe Quake 4 and/or Doom 3 as well, but I've heard Postal 2 isn't great.

As far as I know, Postal 2 isn't running on Ubuntu. I've been trying to run the demo version, but despite a lot of googling and a post in this thread asking for help, no one could tell me what to do. So If somone has a running version of Postal on his *buntu, I would be glad to know how he'd make it work.

I've have the full version of Postal 2 working just fine on 4 different Ubuntu releases. All I ever did was install it so I don't think I can help you much but it works just perfectly.

All right ! So I guess it's just a bug in the demo version, since it's the best way to convince users to buy a complete product... :S Where could I ask for Help ?

It was running fine with hardy, i didnt try with intrepid but it should be fine also

Other than Nexuiz, there aren't any free single player FPS with campaigns. You can get plenty of commercial ones to work with wine, though.

It takes too much time and work and manpower to make a viable campaign FPS. That's why they're all commercial. So for free, we get the same cookie cutter multiplayer game reincarnated into a thousand different sceneries and names.

It's not a FPS, but check out Yo Frankie.

Nexuiz doesn't even have a campaign; the single player is just like multiplayer but with bots, like Quake 3.

Sauerbraten has a Doom-like campaign.

You're right. Sauerbraten was what I was thinking of. It's not bad for a free game with a campaign mode.

This is pretty much the exact thought I had going in, which explains why I wasn't expecting much. However, I don't mind paying for commercial games as long as they're decent.

And wow, from the screenshots I'm looking at, Yo Frankie looks a lot prettier and more awesome than I would have expected. I think I'll download it as soon as I finish typing this reply. Thanks dude!

Before you go buying commercial games, check out Wine's app database to see how well the game works with wine. You don't want to drop hard earned money on something that isn't even going to work.

And if you haven't tried it already, make sure you try the campaign mode of Sauerbraten. It's way better than Nexuiz.

Or Medal of Honor Allied Assault + Spearhead. Loved it while on Windows.

AlephOne. That game has AWESOME single player campaign. And only single player, no multiplayer at all. There are actually many different campaigns made, which are like mods.

Graphics are a bit old, but personally I like them more than some of modern fps games, like cod4. I recommend an xbox controller or any other gamepad for playing, no keyboard or mouse at all.

you can check out prey, its a pretty sweet doom 3 engine based commercial game, and it even has multiplayer (although whether it works with the linux version is left to be seen)

Allied Assault is awesome in Windows, but the sound doesn't work right with the native Linux installation. I've never tried it with Wine, though.

Well, some of the sound works. You just can't hear anyone talking, which is a pain when they're giving you important information. But I'll bet it works perfectly in Wine. It's a pretty good game.

A UT-style campaign is not the kind of campaign I'm looking for because it's still basically multiplayer.

I disagree that it is still basically multiplayer.

I rarely played online. There is an amazing variety of game types available for the single player & they are all challenging. You don't have to play the types of UT2k4 game that you don't like & there are also totally new games that have been built as add-ons.

ive played the utk4 campaign. it is just multiplayer with bots with a terrible story thrown in there.

Well, there's the old but fun CodeRED: Battle for Earth and CodeRED: Martian Chronicles games. Of the old CodeRED series, only CodeRED: Alien Arena has been updated since 2004 or 2005. No Linux ports, but they ought to run just fine in WINE.

Then for those who want to play it online, like I did for a couple of years, it's a pretty good option.
