Fantastic, been waiting to try this out. :)

#3

I...I...I just watched the Youtube video about this game! Couldn't believe my eyes! O.o

All of this made without using fancy 3dstudio max and all that other stuff? It looks stunning, and the idea of having a squirrel type critter as the main character looks fun.

Well, time for some sheep throwing. And time for some seeding. :p

EDIT: Weird how you need Blender, but acceptable. :D

It was made using Blender's game making capabilities

#5

tried crystal space one, way too buggy... going to try blender version.

Downloading with 6kb/s with blender link(5.83K/s eta 24h 31m).It is not hard to copy the game files to game sites or buying 1000mbit line.Torrent is not a solution

#7

I downloaded the CrystalSpace-version, but it wouldn't start. So now I'm downloading blender and the blender-version of the game. Hopefully that'll work.

Not sure what your trouble is, I downloaded it while I was out at the store. Couldn't have taken more than an hour or so.

IDK also.I can browse blender.org super fast, however the subdomain , download.blender.org SUCKS for me :

http://download.blender.org/

it takes 15 seconds to load that image :/ (right now, downloading the game with 3kb/s : ) )

#10

I am tryin to remote upload it to rapidshare, and here is the image after 10 mins :

http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/8652/snapshot1hm7.jpg

I guess there is a problem with blender link :/

#11

I tried getting the game for about 2 days, however the download server is in such a terrible state that the game would not be downloaded in a reliable manner at all, so I guess I need to wait for things to die down, or, if I'm lucky, for a torrent to show up.

Edit:- By the way, the YouTube clip of the game was awesome, kudos to the guys who made this possible:).

Edit2:- Whoops, there was a torrent, but in my drowsiness I failed to spot it the first time, now to go download it. Thanks AI.:)

download.blender.org wouldn't load at all for me, had to use the mirror instead.

This looks very promising, I'm anxious to try it out.

#13

I will post a rapidshare mirror when the upload is done

Having some problems getting the game to run. If I'm not mistaken, the instructions are as follows?

 • Download blender from blender.org
 • Install blender by copying the .blender folder into your home directory
 • in the levels directory of yo frankie, open start_menu.blend

I've followed the Linux installation instructions in the Blender instructions included with the download, but that doesn't seem to be enough, as Ubuntu can't find an application to run start_menu.blend

EDIT: Nevermind, I'll just get blender from apt

K, this is just way too complicated to simply run a game. When I open the start_menu.blend file, I have to hit p to play it, and then it plays in the blender GUI, not within it's own window or anything, and when I do, none of the text appears in the menu options and I can't select anything because the mouse seems to be disabled.

If anyone wants to take Linux gaming seriously on a commercial level, like this project was intended to do, it can't be this complicated just to even open the menu.

Same problem with menu, how to solve?? :(

#16

There is a Linux executable that comes with the download if you download it from the website, and not from a torrent. But even if you downloaded it from a torrent, you should be able to make your own executable fairly easily. Just open start_menu.blend in blender and then go to file -> save runtime. Then just save your file in the game root directory (I don't know if it matters, but that's what I did anyway). Mark it as executable and then run it by navigating to your game root and type:

./<executable name>

Still, it doesn't work for me. I get lots and lots of graphical glitches, I can't get past the game menu, and I get no text or sound.

I have put the runtime (build with Blender 2.48a) in the "levels" folder. The menu is now working for me ;-)

I've tried that too and I've tried to save the runtime file in the yofrankie dir. But non works. Sound is on, but there's no text in the menu.

#19

.

#20

It's a ****** mess. The menu still doesn't have any text, I can't even play the game! Not even the text "the apricot ... presents:" is visible!

If this "game" sends a message to developers about using blender, it's a very simple one: DON'T!

I give it 0 / 10, for simply not even running :(

Vadi said: tried crystal space one, way too buggy... going to try blender version. The Crystal Space download is a testing version from Sept. 11. They pretty much dropped the CS version in favor of Blender's game engine. If you want the final version, you *have* to get the Blender version.

Like Nevon said, the torrent includes the files, but not the executables. If you download the official zip file, it includes an executable that can be run in full screen without having to open Blender. So, the official version isn't complicated.

The menu is now working for me ;-) Thank you. That fixed my problem. When I created the binary to the yofrankie directory it didn't work, but when I moved all those files to the levels directory, it took care of all the graphical glitches. Thank you.

#22

Yey! A new game!!

Thank you Frankie team!!

#23

About time. Been waiting for this

#24

The loop on the lava level is hard.

#25

Someone post a mirror then? Server is still overloaded, and torrents are not an option for me.

forrestcupp said: Thank you. That fixed my problem. When I created the binary to the yofrankie directory it didn't work, but when I moved all those files to the levels directory, it took care of all the graphical glitches. Thank you.

Exactly how did you get it to work, and what version of Blender did you use? I have 2.46, and I get loads of graphical glitches and whatnot.

EDIT: Okay, so I updated to the latest version of Blender, and now I can get the game going without any graphical glitches (although the menu screen looks a little dodgy). However, when I click on "play", the game just crashes. This is the output in the terminal:

executable: shader/slang/slang_codegen.c:2442: _slang_gen_var_decl: Assertion `!is_sampler_type(&var->type)' failed.
Aborted
#27

Wow im eager to try it, looks pretty cool, ans its open source :)

A friend downloaded the Blender version via torrent, I've shared it in my dropbox: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/84880/yofrankie.tar.lzma

Thanks for the upload!!!

I was still downloading:D (check my first post at this thread:D )

WOW! Blender has advanced a lot since I started using Linux. Makes me wonder if Planeshift will drop Crystal Space in favor of Blender.

#31

Some of you really need to reevaluate your stance on free software.

Complaining is one thing, but outright bitching and condemning this title is a bit much. Try and keep this thread a little more civil or just don't post in it...

#32

I haven't managed to get this to work, it just crashes blender the instant I press P

Grant A. said: WOW! Blender has advanced a lot since I started using Linux. Makes me wonder if Planeshift will drop Crystal Space in favor of Blender.

Unlickly, they would have to remake the whole game in BGE.

Since you can get to the menu screen, try going into the options and turning off the shaders. Maybe that will take care of your problem.

Not for those that purchased the DVD like I did.

Oh no. I can only see the menu screen. I can't do anything in it. Also, there's no text, so I can't see where the options option is. Now I've tried it in Windows aswell, without any luck. It just freezes on me before I even get any intro screen. I really don't know what to do anymore. I've tried every version there is, except for the Mac version. I've made my own executables in several different versions of Blender. But nothing seems to work. I'm just going to blame this on my graphics card and ignore the problem.

Did you put the executables and dll/lib files in the "levels" directory? If they're not in that directory, the game doesn't work right. That was my problem to begin with. I created the executables to the "yofrankie" directory and it didn't work. Then I followed csi_'s advice to move them to the "levels" directory, and it worked like a charm.

If you're doing all of that, maybe it *is* your video card.

My video card is a three months old perfectly working NVidia GeForce 8 8600 GT 512 MB with the latest drivers. It should work with the game, and yet I have exactly the same problem. This game simply doesn't function.

Quit our moaning. It works about 50% for me. Try looking for a solution instead of saying it sucks and so forth.

#39

It does though. Rather unpolished, one would expect better quality when something is released on DVD even.

#40

Then you should have just waited a week for the download instead of paying big bucks for it. Even if you wanted to support them, you could have tested the download first, then bought the DVD.

#41

For people still having glitches and trouble, I found out the solution. You have to be using Blender v2.48. It just doesn't work right with the default version in Ubuntu.

I didn't even think about it because I'm already using v2.48.

Yup. I've tried that as well. It never ceases to amaze me how much my graphics card sucks, so I really wouldn't be surprised if that's the problem. Oh, and yes, I've tried it in both Blender 2.46 and 2.48a with the same result.

Actually I pre-ordered as in their campaign went to "support free software". They even promised a name in the DVD pre-order credits. Lied there too apparently, my name is not on there.

#44

You can get latest blender from here: http://www.getdeb.net/app/Blender

Going to give the blender version a try, crystal space one was rather... alpha-stage.

#45

I just want to mention, i just downloaded the package and read about it in the forums... and it works. Putting the runtime into the levels folder worked for me as well. It's awesome what those people achieve and how they are willing to share it.

The project could need some more documentation (or maybe placing it somewhere more obvious).

#46

Ok, I'm an ubuntu newbie and I can't get this game working. I have the latest version of Blender, and I downloaded the Blender version of the game from the website. Could someone please post step-by-step instructions for getting this game working? I'd be most appreciative!

Ubuntu unfortunately doesn't have the latest version of Blender available, so firstly update it from here: http://www.getdeb.net/search.php?keywords=blender

Then in Blender, open levels→start_menu.blend. And then Game→Start Game I guess.

(note, blender's home-made file open dialog is quite poorly designed - might take you a while to figure it out)

Pressing "P" also does the trick.
