Perhaps I am posting this thread in the wrong section. Anyhow, here goes...
I have installed Ubuntu a few times before and usually without a hitch. Ive a Dell Desktop Dimension 5000 now for a few months running Windows Xp. Its a p4, 1gb ram, nvidia geforce 6800. Ubuntu installs fine and then as soon as it starts to load the GUI, it stalls. Before now I have tried fedora core and experienced similiar problems. Now, I am assuming that this is because Ubuntu is trying to use the wrong driver with the 6800. The graphics/text look fine when it is setting up the file system etc... Its just when the GUI starts.
If the problem is that Ubuntu is using the wrong driver why should the text appear fine before it starts loading the GUI. Also, I have no onboard video to boot into ubuntu so I can install the nvidia drivers.
Perhaps, the problem is not with drivers at all though?? But if it is, how should I install them, should I boot into recovery mode?
Any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance.
