Regarding USB latency when running XP in virtualbox

Is there a way to lower the usb latency? I'm trying to use a Midi controller keyboard in the virtualized XP install. The keyboard works, but there is very noticable lag between pressing the keys and the sound generation.

Are there any tweaks that can help lower the lag? Different sound server? edit the usb config file?

Nope. No latency outside of vbox. Sorry about the late reply...

Sorry, I can't help with Vbox. Are you needing to do something in xp that you can't do in Linux?

It's not overly important as I still have two windows machines amongst my Linux machines. I have alot of Music (FLstudio8, Melodyne Crea2.8, Tracktion3 + vst plugins etc...) software and plugins (not to mention the USB and Firewire gear) that I've paid for over the years and was just hoping to have one less reason to keep a windows partition around. I was hoping to just run the software in a virtualized XP install. Technically it all does work, but I suspect that the virtualized hardware introduces this noticable latency.

My laptop worked slow then I added more memory and my vista inside virtualbox runs as fast as it did on its own. everything got alot better with more memory I couldnt believe the difference. That might be your problem.

I can try that, but XP was quite snappy in VBOX. I suppose I could assign more memory to it in the settings and see if indeed that makes a difference. It was on a q6600 with 2gigs of ram... I assigned 768 megs of mem for the vm. I'll bump it to 1gig and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the idea.

I have a E6850 (basically a q6600 with 2 cores) and 2 Gb memory and I use 1400Mb ram on my xp guest and that works great. I think the ram warnings is there for other reasons and are not to be taken to serious on a desktop. But I still have latency issues with my usb midi keyboard. That was what I searched for and first result was to this post. ;)

Let you all know if I find anything.
