Mga Bro at Sis,

Will Ubuntu work on a Fujitsu Lifebook S2020 with the following specs?

Processor: AMD Athlon XP-M 2100 processor 500 MB Cache RAM: 512MB x2 (1GB) Transcend DDR266 HD: 80GB 13.3 XGA TFT Screen ATI Radeon IGP with 3D and M-Peg-2 Maximun 128 MB Atheros WLAN WiFi certified 802.11 D/54G Internal DVD/CD-RW combo drive

I'll be inheriting my aunt's unit come January and I'm planning on getting rid of the windows XP currently installed in it (she was complaining that it's running painfully slow anyways) and using Ubuntu with it.

Ano tingin ninyo?

Salamat po! :p

#2

tingin ko mukhang walang problema, but as always, try the livecd for a while, before doing a full blown install.

#3

Hi loell,

Planning to do a full blown install of Ubuntu on it with no trace of XP but you have a point to try things out.

Thanks.

#4

sure bet pre..gagana yan.:lolflag:

#5

#6

Thanks Guys!

I'm really excited now.

A few days left to go...

#7

#8

Good Luck bro...

#9

Thanks guys! :D

#10

Anong balita? Gumana? :)

#11

Hi Samhain13,

I should be getting the unit any day now :guitar:

Now my only problem is that the copy of 8.10 I asked for is not yet here :(

#12

Hi All!

Got the unit today!

Tried running Ubuntu off the CD and it worked perfectly!

Installing 8.10 now as I type this.

Will keep you guys updated on the progress.

#13

Magaling! Keep us posted. :D

#14

Question though: I noticed that my compiz effects are running slow on this unit. Is it a hardware issue already?

I tried to set up this unit just like my office unit and I find the effects to be slow :(

If it's not a hardware issue, is there a way to fix this issue?

#15

#16

Hi All!

Is this true? :(

Well, I'm really in no position to complain since I got the unit for free.

It would be nice if we can get it to run as fast and as smooth as my office unit though

#17

di ko sure kung hiyang ng ubuntu nvidia, it took me 3 weeks almost para lang ma install card ko amp!:(

#19

well both of them may available na sila drivers for linux x86 and x64.

installable naman sila lahat

cguro pagandahan nalang ng config ng xorg.conf for gnome and kdmrc for kde

as default ng ubuntu lahat eh naka sagad sa high so assume laggy kung mababa ang ram ng pc u...

boyet: The specs of the unit that was given to me is on the very first post on this thread. As for the office unit, all I can tell you at this point is that it is a Toshiba Satellite M50. Is there a way to find out what the specs are in Ubuntu?

kiminaiseah: Ubutntu did not search for any additional video drivers like it did when installing in the office unit so I'm presuming that it's compatible. I have 1GB of RAM installed and provided a 1GB swap partition as well. Is this not enough? While I'm not sure how much RAM my office unit has, I allocated a 1GB swap partition for that too.

Any way to find out the physical specs of the hardware in Ubuntu?

Like I said, I'm really in no position to gripe, but if we can fix the issue and make the unit faster, so much the better right?

Will increasing the swap partition to 2GB help?

Thanks.

#21

Anyone correct me if I am wrong - swap partition is supposed to be half of total RAM tama po ba?

#22

dannybuntu: The way I understand it, the swap partition must be equal to or greater than you installed RAM since it will act as a virtual RAM of sorts assisting you computer.

From what I read on the reviews of my unit on the internet, it's not really that fast but gets the job done. So I guess that would account for the speed asides from the fact that the video card is ATI...

Still, would be nice if we can speed it up though :guitar:

#23

Deleted - Double Post

swap partition or swap file should be (best) equal or double your current memory. say you have n amount of RAM, then the best size for your swap partition/file would be n or n*2....

#25

Thanks Maverick1385.

I'll double the swap partition the next time I get to format it and hopefully that will fix things.

My personal system is running much better than the office system though so I will have to reinstall the office system and set it up like my personal system! ;)

#26

Hi Guys!

A thought just occurred to me, isn't there a way to adjust the swap partition without reinstalling the Ubuntu? I figure that this would be better than waiting until I really have to re-install the OS or upgrade. O:)

Also, is there a way for me to program the custom buttons found on my notebook? I'd also like to assign a function to the now useless windows key ;)

Thanks

You can follow this instruction, however you need a working Ubuntu install to do this..

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick

edit: the software used here also has a Windows version, so you could use an existing windows desktop (if you don't have ubuntu yet)..
