My First Ubuntu Experience

This was back when I had my Gateway MX Laptop with Intel 945GM Graphics and stuff, which was quite some time ago. Around 7.10 or so.

Ubuntu at the time was really peaking my interest, and I decided to install it. At first run, I had most of the menus and stuff memorized. The problems came after that when I had to use terminal for certain things, among remembering what commands do what. Soon after, I tried Xubuntu, which wasn't all that easy to get used to when going from Ubuntu to it.

Compiz worked much better on my Intel 945GM than it did on my ATI Radeon HD 3200 that I have in my desktop computer. I regret selling my laptop now... boy I was a fool. If I hadn't, I'd still be using Ubuntu, it's a great system with lots of potential.

why not use ubuntu without compiz? it's not mandatory. the cube is cool for about 2 minutes, but after that i have no need for it.

I guess I could, but I still think it's cool.

i take it you're using windows without a 3D desktop? if you're going to use an OS without 3D, why not use one that you claim to like? or you could at least dual boot.

I do like Ubuntu though, so I'll probably end up using that.

I think this is the equivalent of saying, "Well, if you're only ever going to drive 55 mph anyway, why buy a Porsche instead of a Geo?"

Translation: no, Windows doesn't have 3d either, but it doesn't *claim* to, which is the difference. Ubuntu claims to have (and has) 3d desktop capabilities...and if you're going to have Ubuntu, even if you don't *need* the 3d...you should still be able to get it. To continue the car analogy: it's like buying a Porsche and having it governed to 45 mph. Might as well not have the damn thing at all, right? Unless you're shallow and just like the looks....

As it stands, I agree with you, Wolfen. I got bored with the 3d cube very quickly. However, because I happen to understand that ATI makes better video cards than nVidia, I still can't use desktop effects, window effects, or any of the other stuff I *do* like, that just so happens to come hand-in-hand with the cube.

Hopefully they are fixing that in 9.04 with the release of that new ATI thing...but I digress.

NVIDIA Drivers > ATI Drivers

And hopefully Compiz 0.7.9 will be out soon, can't wait to have protobuf on with a default ubuntu compiz rather than git.

@jrock: i'm not sure the car analogy is really appropriate here, but if someone is going to stay with windows because they can't get a 3D desktop in ubuntu, they should probably stay with windows. because this would lead me to believe that they weren't that serious in the first place, about using ubuntu.

and on top of that, it just didn't make sense to me that someome would use windows without 3D effects, but wouldn't use a more stable, secure OS without 3D.

i suggest giving SabayonLinux a try if you want eye-candy. you might be surprised what another distro can do. sometimes changing to another distro will make 3D work better. the video drivers are built into the OS, so compiz will work out of the box. good luck.

no, you're not. i like a fast and efficient computer. if i get the urge for some eye candy (which does happen once in a great while) i just pop in my Sabayon live disc and play some 3D games and GoogleEarth for about an hour or 2. but at the end of it all, i have to go back to my lightning fast debian install and get back to business.

Oh I wasn't disagreeing with you. I agree; if you don't really want to quit Windows, you won't - no matter what the alternative OS does or does not do.

I was just trying to see things from his perspective. For new users, it *is* frustrating to see all the cube effects and whatnot on youtube, and then come to find that - after you've installed the new OS - those effects aren't available.

Again, I agree. Ubuntu *is* the faster, more stable system and - 3d or not - in my opinion it looks better than Windows, especially if you go with KDE.

LOL! No kidding. I set it all up, flipped it around a few times, said, "Neat.", and then turned it right back off. :lolflag:

Do wish I could use the other effects, though. Oh well, maybe 9.04 will have that new ATI thing and everything will work. :)

I hope so too, the constant hanging in 8.10 yet not in 8.04 gets me down when using compiz.
